Best Exercises for Turnout

Writer's picture: AmandaHowardAmandaHoward

Going along with my pointe series, I wanted to talk a little bit about turnout. I have a student who struggles with hip mobility and turnout. We've been working on a lot of new techniques, exercises, and stretches (because every person is different and different things work for different people) that have loosened her hips and have increased her overall turnout in only 1 week!

With that said, turnout is incredibly important and sometimes things that work for some dancers, don't work for others. Here are 5 exercises/stretches that you can try to increase your turnout.

1. Frog Stretch to Single Leg Extended

She was sitting a little too far back during this stretch, so make sure you are keeping your butt in line with your knees.

2. Resistance Band Clams

3. Seated Leg Rotations

4. Supine Leg Extension

5. Turnout Exercise at the Barre

I hope that these exercises work as well for you as they did for me and my student.

What turnout exercises/stretches do you love the most?

Until next time,

Amanda
