Monday Motivation - Why is Sleep so Important?

Ah, sleep! I've been slightly lacking in sleep the past couple of days. Sleep is so extremely important for your overall health. Proper amounts of sleep will:

  • Help you heal faster

  • Decrease your risk of injury

  • Boost your mood and immune system

  • Promote clearer thinking

  • Control weight

  • Improve memory

Melatonin is a special hormone that makes you feel tired and can help you fight cancer. Going to bed when you start to feel tired is important to keep the melatonin in your brain at the appropriate level for a full night's sleep.

Watching T.V., using your laptop, or checking your phone can reduce melatonin levels. The blue light tricks your brain into thinking it's daytime. Keep any electronic devices at least 3 feet away from you while you sleep.

If you have trouble falling asleep, try some warm turmeric milk before bed. The turmeric reduces inflammation, Manuka honey sweetens it up a bit, and everyone knows that warm milk helps calm the body. Simply warm up some milk in a small pot with 1 teaspoon of Makuka honey and 1/2 teaspoon turmeric.

It is best to get at least 8 hours of continuous sleep at night, especially if you are physically active during the day. Sleep will help your body recover from the stress of the day.

How much sleep do you normally get at night?

I hope you had a restful night last night and you're ready for a new week! I challenge you to carve out enough time at night to get the proper amount of sleep that your body needs. Have a wonderful Monday!

Until next time,

Amanda
