National Stress Awareness Day - Finding Ways to Overcome Daily Stress

Phew! That's a mouthful of a title! But, I find that it is such an important topic.

Stress exists everywhere you look. It comes in many forms - physical, mental, and emotional. I'm not saying this to discourage you, I'm saying this to teach you. I have posted about stress and its negative effects on the body a couple of times already. However, I want to reiterate, mostly for those of you who are new to the blog, what stress does and why we should try and avoid it as much as we can.

When you are stressed, cortisol and adrenaline are released into your bloodstream causing a reaction called "fight or flight." Being constantly under stress can cause a regular release of cortisol that can result in decreased function of your adrenal glands.

Adrenal glands are what control certain hormones in your body to keep it functioning properly. When the adrenals are depleted, you can get headaches and muscle aches due to hypersensitivity in the brain and nerves. Other symptoms of fatigued adrenals include:

· Impair cognitive function

· Suppress the thyroid gland

· Decrease bone density and muscle tissue

· Raise blood pressure

· Increase the risk of hypoglycemia

· Slowed healing

· Lower the immune system

So, you can see why being constantly under stress can be detrimental to your health. In fact, regular amounts of stress can actually encourage weight-gain.

What can you do to avoid stress?

The best thing to do is when you feel that you are beginning to get stressed out, take a deep breath and relax. This can be easier said than done, especially in the moment. Breathing deep and getting enough sleep will help you think clearly and focus on remaining calm and collected.

Do some activities that you love! Garden, read a book, watch a Rom-Com, dance, laugh, eat your favorite meal, exercise...anything that you find joy in, build it into your day to help you relax. Seems easy doesn't it? That's because it can be. The simplest way to avoid stress is by remaining relaxed and calm.

If you would like more information on stress, its effects, and how to overcome, please check out my book. A Dancer's Diary has all the information you need to easily build a stress-free environment into your life.

In the meantime, feel free to contact me with any questions you may have on this topic.

Until next time,

Amanda
