In the winter, it can be hard to keep your skin moisturized with all the hand-washing, hot water, and frigid winds. If you are struggling with dry skin right now, here are a few ways you can prevent your skin from getting even drier. Enjoy!
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is an essential fatty acid that can help hydrate and smooth the skin. You can also take a teaspoon on oil internally (straight up, in cooking, or bullet-proof coffee) for extra added benefit. It's gentle enough for everyday use and can even be applied to sensitive areas such as around the eyes and mouth.
Oatmeal Baths
Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe irritation from dry skin. Process the oatmeal until it resembles a fine powder and stir it into warm water, or you can add whole oats to a large tea bag and place it in the bath. Moisturize with lotion afterward to lock in the benefits.
Eat Your Omega-3s
Having a diet full of healthy fats will show improvements in dry skin. Try adding walnuts, fish (sardines, salmon, herring, mackerel, etc.), flax seeds, and chia seeds to your diet.
Avoid Lots of Hot Showers
Hot water can dry out your skin a lot faster. Experiment with adjusting your shower temperature and avoid harsh soaps. I've provided recommendations below.
Use a Humidifier
If you are constantly using your heating system (which...I guess everyone is), it can strip moisture from the air. A humidifier can replace this moisture, helping with preventing dry skin.
Soap and Lotion Recommendations
You want to stick to natural, gentle soaps and lotions to avoid dry skin and maintain a chemical-free lifestyle. Here are just a few options:
