Today I will be sharing an excerpt of A Dancer's Diary. This section is directly from chapter four, Effective Weight Control. Enjoy!
Diet and Sugar-Free Drinks and Foods Avoid sugar and simple carbohydrates as much as possible! They both spike the insulin levels giving you an energy high but a significant crash shortly afterward. When avoiding sugar, a lot of people tend to gravitate toward sugar-free desserts, drinks, and candies. This is a big no-no. Diet and sugar-free items are extremely bad for your health. In fact, diet or sugar-free drinks and foods can be worse for your body than actual sugar can. Doctors Mehmet Oz and Mike Roizen wrote an article in The Oregonian saying, "[E]ven with FDA approval, conflicting and often bothersome research about calorie-free sweeteners keeps bubbling to the surface. The latest? Evidence from human studies shows that artificially sweetened drinks are associated with weight gain in adults and teens, and raise risk for diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Some data even suggest that these zero-calorie sips could double the risk for metabolic syndrome, a huge risk factor for diabetes and heart disease. Other recent reports show consumption is linked to higher rates of depression," * The worst artificial sweetener is aspartame. It is constantly being linked to diseases such as certain cancers including leukemia, and Alzheimer’s. You can find aspartame in gum, soda, candy, and even ice cream. So, stay away from diet and sugar-free drinks and foods. They are terrible for your health and will not help you lose weight. If you must have something sweet, try sticking to foods that are naturally sweetened. Turbinado sugar, coconut sugar, stevia, honey, maple syrup, and molasses are examples of healthy choices that you can use to sweeten your foods. Even though these are healthier forms of sugar, they still must be eaten in moderation. Your sugar consumption should be limited to about six teaspoons a day, not including fruit.
I encourage you to do your own research, as sometimes it takes researching for yourself for information to sink in. Below I have listed some of the best resources on this topic.
Until next time,
Amanda
