Friday Flexibility

Writer's picture: AmandaHowardAmandaHoward

Today is the start of a series that I will be going through this June. Every Friday we will talk a little about flexibility and I will share some exercises and stretches that will help you increase your flexibility. At any time during this series, please let me know if you have any tips on what has worked for you. I also encourage you to sign up for the member's area to connect with other dancers who struggle with flexibility.

One of the best ways to increase flexibility is by releasing the nerves. When the nerves are restricted, they are not able to move in their sheaths, preventing movement in your limbs. If your muscles are too tight, the muscle fibers can cause pressure on these nerves causing them to be restricted.

The best way to release the muscle fibers and nerves is through massage and/or foam rolling.

Rolling the foam roller all over your glutes, hamstrings, calves, quads, and IT band will help release muscles, increasing the flexibility in your legs. You should never feel pain, so remove some of your body weight by lifting yourself off the roller slightly.

Another great way to massage your glutes, back, feet, and calves is by using a tennis ball. Put the tennis ball under the tight muscle and put some of your weight on it. Roll it up and down, side to side, and even hold it in areas that are especially tight to loosen the muscle fibers.

Let me know if any of these techniques have helped you. Check back next Friday for more tips on how to increase flexibility.

Until next time,

Amanda
